Travel Saved My Life.

travel

TRAVEL SAVED MY LIFE.

Travel and I go way back. Like middle school way back. There are several ways that travel has changed me for the better, but the most specific experience was one my very first mission trip. The transformation was so vast that I remember exactly the moment when something in me changed, I know exactly where I was standing and exactly what I was doing. I remember stopping dead in my tracks and tears falling out of eyes while my heart literally was falling in love. But it was not a conventional love, it was a love for travel humanitarianism.
I was thirteen years old when I did my first humanitarian work and that was also the year that the wanderlust bug bit me. My youth group at church was leading a mission trip to Costa Rica with the goal of rebuilding the inside of the parsonage, and while I had really had no idea how much work it would involve or what the living conditions were like, I was all in.
So I raised money for the trip by selling homemade plated food from the church to friends and family, packed my bags, boarded a plane and took off for a foreign country.
When we arrived and first stepped out of the San Jose airport the heat and humidity were almost overwhelming. I can still feel the heaviness of the air on my face whenever I close my eyes, it is something I will never forget. Little did I know was that our journey had just begun and the real adventure was about to start.
From the airport we had an eight hour bus ride to the small village of Palmar Norte where the church was located. Now, this may not seem that terrible but when you consider us going up and over mountains, getting stuck behind herds of cattle and thought traffic jams that would make New York City look easy, it was just a bit overwhelming.
When we finally arrived everyone had a thick film of sweat on the skin, bags under their eyes, and longed for a soft bed. But instead we were greeted with a brief hello and a hard floor where we were unroll our sleeping bags and rest for the night. Honestly, I hardly even remember falling asleep from pure exhaustion, but I do remember thinking to myself, "what have I gotten myself into??".
That was the first step of my travel transformation and the beginning of the rest of my life. I will forever be grateful to this mission trip as it literally saved me and made me who I am today - a fun loving, caring and compassionate traveler who is always thirsting for the next adventure!

8 Dreamy Overwater Bungalows - Western Hemisphere

QUIT DREAMING OF OVERWATER BUNGALOWS AND MAKE THEM A REALITY!

Overwater bungalows are what every person dreams are made of, but sadly many feel that the dreams will never become a reality. Between long and expensive flights and not enough time off, traveling to the Maldives or French Polynesia just may not be in the cards for some people.
Imagine the perfect wake up call. Warm sunshine kissing your face as the morning winds make their way through your open windows. You welcome the start of a new day with excitement as opposed to dread and no need for coffee and a shower, your morning routine is a jump from your porch into crystal clear water. How is that for perfect?
What if I told you that overwater bungalows exist in the Western Hemisphere also? Its true, paradise can be found in countries like Honduras, Panama, Mexico, Cuba, St. Lucia, Jamaica and many more. The need to travel half way across the world for a chance to sleep over the sea is gone and United Military Travel can get you there!

YOU CAN EXPERIENCE THAT AT ANY OF THESE 10 OVERWATER BUNGALOWS....

overwater bungalow
Perhaps the most affordable overwater bungalow resort in the world, the Coral Lodge features just 6 overwater bungalows plus two restaurants and a spa. The lodge is a boutique resort in a secluded part of the San Blas Islands in Panama. If you are looking to truly escape the rat race this resort is for you as there are no TVs or internet, so a distraction free vacation is nearly guaranteed.
  • Low season online specials from US$345 per night
  • High season online specials from US$398 per night

At Punta Caracol the 9 overwater bungalows all you to immersed in nature and escape the world because there are hardly any electronics here. The eco resort is powered by solar panels and TVs and entertainment systems are strictly banned to ensure the guests a full chance to unwind. The most attractive perk the Acqua Lodge offers is that breakfast and dinner are offered in the room rate, creating an almost all-inclusive style resort.
  • Low season online specials from US$350 per night
  • High season online specials from US$427 per night

This eco-resort is located just a short boat ride away from the main town on Bocas del Toro in Panama, the Eclypse de Mar Resort has 6 overwater bungalows, two of which are Honeymoon Suites. Rooms here are more basic, like no air conditioner basic, but the price is also much lower as well so if you are searching for a "budget" overwater bungalow this is for you.
  • Low season online specials from US$275 per night
  • High season online specials from US$275 per night
overwater bungalow
This all-inclusive resort is located off Roatan Island offers 16 overwater bungalows and is all about scuba diving! The diving off Honduras is a world renowned and the resort offers surprisingly affordable package upgrades to include all-inclusive diving. Guests who sign up for that plan get two boat-diving sessions per day, plus unlimited 24/7 shore diving, all in an area famous for excellent underwater scenery.
  • Low season online specials from US$219 per night
  • High season online specials from US$253 per night
overwater bungalows
Located on a private island 9 miles from Dangriga in Belize, the Thatch Caye Resort is probably the closest thing to a Maldives-style complex anywhere in the Western Hemisphere. The all-inclusive resort never has more than 24 guests at any given time, the service and food is excellent and those with large groups will find comfortable accommodations here.  has 5 overwater cabanas which are perched just over the water’s edge, plus one huge Family Suite comprised of 2 bedroom cabanas and 1 living room/kitchenette cabana.
  • Low season online specials from US$297 per night
  • High season online specials from US$446 per night
overwater bungalows
Just a short boat ride from Belize City itself, St. George’s Caye Resort is located on a mostly private island. Six of their 12 bungalows are located on a semi-circular pier, so they are over the water but also bunched together as well. This resort works on a mostly all-inclusive basis, with all food and even rum punch (one per day, per guest) included in the room rate, making it quite a good value when those are factored in.
  • Low season online specials from US$437 per night (including all meals for two guests)
  • High season online specials from US$437 per night (including all meals for two guests)
overwater bungalows
While it calls itself a resort, most guests describe Glover’s Atoll as a private-island campground that has 8 overwater cabins as well. It’s located in a great diving and fishing area and it’s very cheap compared to any other “resort” on this list, but it’s cheap for a reason. None of the cabins have electricity, plus you have to share a bathroom with the others on the island. If you ever wanted to know what it would be like to deserted on a tropical island, this is it.
  • Low season online specials from US$45 per night
  • High season online specials from US$45 per night
overwater bungalows
If you aren't to strict on the definition of “overwater bungalows” then consider Hotel Melia Cayo Coco. Each bungalow has 6 rooms, so it is similar to a floating motel if you will. Its 68 rooms are in 18 structures over its inland lagoon, just steps from the beach. It’s a bit dated, to say the least, but if you are legally able to go to Cuba then this might suit your needs well.
  • Low season online specials from US$252 per night
  • High season online specials from US$374 per night

Travel To Cuba Decoded By CNN!

Travel To Cuba

TO TRAVEL TO CUBA...

TO NOT TRAVEL TO CUBA.

THAT HAS BEEN THE LONG STANDING QUESTION IN MY MIND EVER SINCE OBAMA RESTORED DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS, BUT TRY TO DECIPHER ALL THE LEGAL LANGUAGE HAS BEEN BLOWING MY MIND!

Bless you CNN for decoding all the legal mumbo jumbo that is the Cuba travel laws! Now that I have read what the American travel rights are, I am confident I should travel to Cuba. Read the full article here for many more travel tips to Cuba!
To briefly sum up what Maria Sofferin wrote for CNN travel to Cuba is allowed if you fall into one of these categories:
• Visiting family
• Humanitarian projects or to provide support to the Cuban people
• Official business of the U.S. government, foreign governments and certain intergovernmental organizations
• Journalistic activities
• Professional research
• Educational activities by persons at academic institutions
• People to people travel
• Religious activities
• Public performance, clinics, workshops, athletic or other competitions and exhibitions
• Authorization to provide travel services, carrier services and remittance forwarding services
• Activities of private foundations, research or educational institutes
• Exportation of certain Internet-based services

THE BIG QUESTION IS THIS, HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU QUALIFY TO FIT INTO ANY OF THESE CATEGORIES TO TRAVEL TO CUBA? SIMPLE! YOU QUALIFY YOURSELF!

The traveler categories are self-authorizing.
What was once a formal application system has essentially been converted into an honor system whereby you conclude whether you meet the categorical criteria. Maria Sofferin // CNN
How incredibly genius is that? So basically, since I am a travel blogger and freelance writer I qualify to travel to Cuba under the "journalistic" category and would totally be in the clear. Wow! Now, what that doesn't mean is that you are free to lounge on the beach all day getting to know the local's favorite liquor or so they say. How can you be spotted out of the thousands of Canadians and Europeans sun bathing on the beach and be fined or worse?
Doesn't make sense to me!

BUT SIMPLY SPEAKING, IF YOU CAN FIT YOURSELF INTO ANY OF THE 12 LISTED CATEGORIES YOU ARE SELF-PROCLAIMED ALLOWED TO TRAVEL TO CUBA ANYTIME YOU WANT.

So apply for your tourist Visa, pay the $25, wait 4 weeks for it to arrive and BOOM off to Cuba you go!

AND DON'T FORGET TO CALL UNITED MILITARY TRAVEL FOR ALL YOUR TRAVEL NEEDS! TRAVEL TO CUBA NOW THROUGH UMT!

Need To Know: Diving The Great Barrier Reef

IS DIVING THE GREAT BARRIER REEF SOMETHING YOU HAVE ALWAYS DREAMT ABOUT?

What are you doing to make that dream happen?
diving the great barrier reef
In 2009 I started making my dreams happen by moving to Alaska and turns out that it was just the start of the rest of my life. From then on, I was bound and determined to continue living my dreams - so what did I do next? I booked a plane ticket to Australia!
One of the motivating factors of choosing Australia was diving the Great Barrier Reef because it was something I had wanted to do since I was a little girl. Growing up I was spend hours reading National Geographic, watching Blue Planet, learning how to become a marine biologist - the ocean completely consumed me then and still does.
It is slightly surreal when you find yourself in adulthood and making off items on your dream list and knowing you did it all by yourself.  Journeying to Australia was like embarking on my own personal pilgrimage and diving the Great Barrier Reef was like finding the Holy Grail. There truly are no words to how incredible and life changing it was.

I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU THE NEED TO KNOW: DIVING THE GREAT BARRIER REEF FACTS SO YOU CAN BE MORE PREPARED THAN I WAS FOR THE LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE.

diving the great barrier reef
First: You need to have on you your "C" Card (certification card) or qualification papers in order to dive the reef.
With that being said, I joined a day trip expecting to just snorkel because I hadn't been certified, but when I boarded the boat the mate asked me if I wanted to dive. I of course answered yes and that was the end of that. While cruising to our dive location, I was taken aside and given a 15 minute course on diving.
In hindsight, diving the Great Barrier Reef with this group was probably not the safest option but hey...coulda, shoulda, woulda!
Second: If photographing underwater...USE A FLASH!
I made the horrible mistake of not using my flash when underwater and all my images came out dark. My photos did not truly represent all the beautiful colors the Great Barrier Reef is - do not make the same mistake.
Third: Do your homework!
There are hundreds of companies that provide dive/snorkel tours of the Great Barrier Reef, do not settle on the first one you come across.
Diving the Great Barrier Reef you have so many options like whether you want to see sharks, sea turtles, day trip, night trip, multi day trips etc. Don't be like me and just hastily make a decision because chances are its the only time you will do it. For a list of options visit Diving Cairns official website!

DIY Long Haul Flight Survival Kit

HOW DO YOU FAIR ON A LONG HAUL FLIGHT?

long haul flight

DO YOU FIND YOURSELF ASKING THE STEWARDESS HOW MUCH LONGER AND INTERNALLY SCREAMING WHEN YOU REALIZE YOU HAVE ONLY BEEN IN AIR FOR TWO HOURS???

If this sounds like you, you need to create an amazing DIY long haul flight survival kit! Please do not get this confused with your carry-on, this kit can be merged with it, but it deserves special love and attention if you truly want to come off the flight unscathed.
On my last long haul flight I was heading from San Francisco to Australia which totaled about 14.5 hours and I was totally unprepared. Not only did I not have a survival kit, I was in a middle seat and to make matters worse....beside a constant talker! Believe me when I tell you that it was God awful!

LOOKING BACK ON THAT LONG HAUL FLIGHT THERE ARE MANY THINGS I WISH I HAD.

For example...
An Eye mask, what better way to show people that you are sleeping and do not want to be disturbed! Not only does it help you be left alone, it truly does help you sleep better.
Ear plugs would have been amazing! I would have given anything to block out the gentleman beside me chatting his booty off throughout the entire flight.
Phone or tablet AND a charging tableThis would have made a world of difference because I read my one book in no tim and flipping through the airline mags got boring. As I sat squished and bored at the others who were surfing the web, I could feel my face becoming green with envy....it did not feel good!

HERE ARE THE THINGS I ALWAYS BRING ON A LONG HAUL FLIGHT AND THAT SHOULD ALWAYS BE IN YOUR FLIGHT SURVIVAL KIT!

Travel guide on destination. Camera. Ear Buds. Music Playing Device. Warm and easily packable jacket.
A  neck pillow. Comfy socks. Tooth brush and toothpaste. Pen and paper. Books.
Snacks. Magazines. Antibacterial wipes.
Every long haul flight deserves special thought because being stuck on airplane is truly like nothing else. Sitting shoulder to shoulder, breathing recycled air, turbulence, insomnia, bad breath, restless leg syndrome and many other nuisances can really make a person go bonkers.

PREPARED YOURSELF BY CREATING A DIY LONG HAUL FLIGHT SURVIVAL KIT.
