Off Season Travel Pro's/Con's & Where To Go

HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED OFF SEASON TRAVEL?

off season travel
Nearly deserted beach
You should, but you need to understand the good, bad and ugly's of traveling to destinations when it is there off season first.  Why?  Because you need asses if the pro's out weight the con's before you book your trip - otherwise you may find yourself up a creek without a paddle!

HERE ARE THE PRO'S TO OFF SEASON TRAVEL....

Total cost savings is undoubtably the most obvious reason why off season travel is attraction and according to research it is true that hotels and attractions need to lure more travelers during this slower period.  Meaning they will offer better discounts and perks to entice you to choose them over the competitors.  BUT this means you should book directly with them instead of booking through a third party such as Expedia or Hotels.com.
I have found this to be extremely helpful and it has landed me in some of the top hotels and attractions for less money and also less people.  You try doing that during the high season!
Speaking of high season, it is important to remember that sometimes a destination's high season may not actually be the best time to visit because it also means school will probably be out.  Do you really want to share space with hordes and hordes of school kids??  I sure don't...
For example, Orlando Florida's off season tends to follow school calendars making the best time to visit when school is in session.  The best way to handle this is by saving up a few of your child's sick days and using them for a vacation!

HERE ARE THE CON'S TO OFF SEASON TRAVEL....

The weather often times in often season travel can be unpredictable and down right nasty, hence the reason no one visits there that time of year.  A great way around the weather is to choose attractions that will not be interrupted due to inclement weather....simply plan ahead.
Also, purchase traveler's insurance.  I recommend doing this overtime you travel, but most certainly for off season travel because you could literally save yourself thousands if the worst happens.
The main draw back to many people in off season travel is that some of the main attractions, national parks, shops, restaurants, and even resorts may be closed or close early.  But, good news is that some destinations have attractions that are specific to off season travel like swimming with Whale Sharks or animal watching.

OFF SEASON TRAVEL: WHERE TO GO

The experts with USA Travel News recommend:
If you're planning a trip to Europe, consider a wintertime visit. Though the region's cultural capitals will be chilly (think ParisRomeLondon), these locales offer plenty to do indoors. If you're looking to stay stateside, you've got plenty of options here, too.
Sutherland and Jaronski recommend theme park-heavy Orlando, Floridafor shorter lines, slimmer crowds and lower lodging rates during the city's off-season (the months of May and September). Brave Chicago's winter chill and you'll be rewarded with budget-friendly hotel and flight prices, plus plenty of indoor activities (including Chicago Restaurant Week), according to Michael Samm from Choose Chicago. The Finger Lakes region in New York is often considered a summer destination, but the area also boasts affordable skiing and lodging in winter and a variety of winter festivals, according to Valerie Knoblauch of the Ontario County Tourism Bureau.
Most travelers flock to Colorado's ski resorts over the winter holidays (which can stretch from Christmas through President's Day), but there are plenty of days in between and early in the season — considered "off-peak" — where deals can be found. If you time it right, you can enjoy the same winter activities, while scoring better lodging rates, ski-free deals, cheaper airfare and shorter lift lines.
"Our guests who travel to Vail during these time periods say that they find the mountain is wide open, it's easier to get reservations… and they have more time to do the things they want," said Davy Ratchford, Vail Resort's director of marketing.

2016 Military Child of the Year

military child of the year

OPERATION HOMEFRONT IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE 8TH ANNUAL MILITARY CHILD OF THE YEAR EVENT IS NO UNDERWAY!

Military children simply amaze me with their resilience, patriotism, patience, and experiences.  I am a mother and when I try to imagine my son having to relocate every four years, live without one of us for months on end (or perhaps permanently), make new friends, be the "man of the house" and all while keeping up his school work and extra curricular activities breaks my heart!
Then we should think about how many members of the Armed Forces we have and almost all of them has a family...that is a lot of military children!

MILITARY CHILD OF THE YEAR IS A FANTASTIC EVENT THAT TRULY REPRESENTS A GOOD CAUSE.  WHILE  ALL MILITARY CHILDREN DESERVE AN AWARD AND RECOGNITION, THE ONES THAT EXCEL THROUGH THE HARDSHIPS OF  MILITARY LIFE DESERVE THE TITLE.

Operation Homefront, a national nonprofit organization, is accepting nominations for the 2016 Military Child of the Year awards.
Operation Homefront leads more than 2,500 volunteers with nationwide presence who provide emergency and other financial assistance to the families of service members and wounded warriors.
The eighth annual awards will recognize six outstanding young people ages 8 to 18 to represent the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and National Guard for their scholarship, volunteerism, leadership, extracurricular involvement, and other criteria while facing the challenges of military family life, officials said.
On average, they added, previous recipients have had at least one parent deploy for 18 months or longer and have relocated at least five times due to a parent’s military assignments.
The six awardees will receive $10,000 each and a laptop computer and other donated gifts, and they will be flown with a parent or guardian to Washington for an April 14 gala, during which senior leaders of each branch of service will present the awards.
“It’s our honor to celebrate military children through the Military Child of the Year for the eighth consecutive year,” said Operation Homefront President and CEO John I. Pray, Jr. “Whether it’s in schools or honor societies, civic associations and clubs, sports or volunteerism, you never have to look far to find an exemplary military child who thrives in the face of challenges inherent to military life. As we open up the nomination window, please join us in celebrating the resilience, achievement and strength of character embodied by our youngest patriots and submit a nomination to recognize them today.” source

Tips For Cruising Newbies

Cruising Newbies

ARE YOU NEW TO VACATIONING ON THE HIGH SEAS?

THESE TIPS WILL HELP ALL CRUISING NEWBIES GET MORE OUT OF THEIR VACATION!

Attention cruising newbies!!
United Military Travel  offers Cruise Now Pay Later Military Travel Loans to all members of the Armed Forces and government employees!  Our experienced team can walk you through the entire process and book your dream cruise for you today, just call 866-582-9579

1. DO THE MATH ON THE DRINK PACKAGES.

A lot of cruise ships offer drink packages, which sound like a nice, worry-free way to enjoy yourself while onboard. But in some cases, you'd have to drink at least 8 alcoholic beverages per day to get your money's worth with the package. Crunch the numbers ahead of time to see if a package is the best option for you.

2. BYOW

Depending on the cruise line's rules, you can usually bring two bottles of wine onboard per cabin, which will save you quite a bit on drinks. Most people pick up their bottles at the arrival airport's Duty Free Shop. Pack it in your carry on; you'll be able to get it through ship security without any problems.

3. PACK EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR YOUR FIRST DAY IN YOUR CARRY ON.

The cruise company will generally pick up your checked luggage and bring it right to the ship for you. Convenient, except that you might not get your bag back until late in the evening, so make sure you have a change of clothes, swim suit, prescriptions and any other essentials in your carry on.

4. PREPARE FOR TIGHT QUARTERS.

If you didn't spring for a suite, you might be surprised at how compact the showers are. The majority of the cabins feature showers that are about 3"x 3" so if you're at all claustrophobic or on the larger side, you'll want to talk to cruise director right away to see if they can accommodate you.

5. THE SPECIALTY RESTAURANTS ARE OFTEN WORTH IT.

Most cruise lines have specialty restaurant that require a slight upcharge of $25-$35 per person. While you might feel compelled to make the most of the meals that come included with your cruise, the specialty restaurants often offer a better dining experience and higher quality food. Just remember that you usually need to make your reservation right away on day 1 or day 2.

6. OPT FOR THE LATE SEATING.

Most cruise lines offer two dinner seatings -- one early, one late. Pick the late seating because many of the excursions won't get you back in time for the early seating. Let your travel agent or cruise operator know as early as possible to ensure a spot.

7. TRY THIS "ADJOINING ROOMS" HACK.

This is a new trick I just learned!  If your group booked rooms next to each other but didn't pony up for adjoining rooms, you may still be able to share your space -- if you have a balcony. Just ask maintenance to remove the divider on your balcony to open up the space. But don't ask for this until you board the ship; if you ask ahead of time, the cruise company will likely try to upsell you to true adjoining rooms.

8. TAKE THE EXCURSIONS.

As soon as you book, check out which excursions the cruise line offers. If you don't see what you want -- for example something special such as horseback riding or a cooking class -- you can book other activities directly with tour operators on the ground in your destination.

9. EXPECT DECK CHAIRS TO BE IN HIGH DEMAND.

While the ship's at sea, there's not much to do so everybody tries to stake a claim in the seats closest to the pool. Historically, people would try to save pool chairs by waking at the crack of down and laying towels over the seats to reserve them. But cruise lines are now hip to that, so expect the deck police to come along and place a sticker with a time stamp on the back of your chair. If you don't return for 40 minutes, they'll remove your towel to free up the chair for someone else.

Alternative Travel - Cruise On A Container Ship

cruise on a container ship

THIS IS SOMETHING NEW TO ME, PAYING TO CRUISE ON A CONTAINER SHIP.

Why would you choose a container ship over a luxury liner that offers fine dining, discos, cocktails with little umbrellas, and diversity?
For  expat Rebecca Hall, the answer was simple; she wanted to live out her life motto.  She lives her life by this, "Life Beyond Borders", which is also the name of her amazing blog.  So in 2013 she booked her trip onboard a container ship that departed from her "home" country, Greece, and sailed to Hong Kong all by herself!
People frown when I tell them that's exactly what I did; in 2013 I was the only passenger on board an 83,000 tonne container ship from Athens to Hong Kong. 37 days with a crew of 27 men, via ports in Italy, Spain, back to Piraeus in Athens, through Suez to the pirate area of the Arabian Gulf (where three security force guards joined the ship for 10 days) to Singapore, and then the South China Seas up to Hong Kong for my disembarkation.
On her blog she documented each and every day sparing no detail about what she did during the days at sea, conversations with the captains and crew, what she ate, and what she learned.  Literally, if you ever wanted to know more about what it would be like to cruise on a container ship her have to read her blog because she did a fantastic job sharing her experience!

THIS CRUISE ON A CONTAINER SHIP WAS NOT HER FIRST EXPERIENCE BUT RATHER HER SECOND!

Back in 2005 this adventurous gal cruised the across the Atlantic from Europe to the Caribbean...again all by herself!  Read more about her adventure here to learn about her meals with the senior crew, how she got to be a spectator to their safety drills, and really why she chose to do it.  Her stories are simply amazing!
When asked why she was doing it by her close friends her answer was simple:

“THE JOURNEY’S ALL PART OF THE FUN…BESIDES, YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND, BEING AN EX MAN OF THE SEA.” DAD

Having been nurtured since birth on stories of the great high seas and countries afar, my wanderlust for all things original had certainly been, in part, from his gene pool.
This to me is something I can relate too because I too have grown up in a traveling family where they have nurture my need to see the world and ingrain in me the importance of seeing the world.
Way to go Rebecca, keep following your dreams!!!
I have nothing but admiration for her and it makes me wish that others would be as adventurous and courageous as Rebecca.  Maybe this blog post and her story will inspire you to consider alternative travel methods as well.

Top 10 Halloween Attractions Across The U.S.

DO YOU LOVE SCARY, GORY, CREEPY AND FRIGHENTING THINGS??? IF SO, THESE HALLOWEEN ATTRACTIONS ARE FOR YOU!

Best 10 Halloween Attractions for 2015

13TH GATE BATON ROUGE, LA

Halloween Attractions
I personally am going to avoid this place at all cost, but for the lover of scary things you should mark this as a must see.  Films such as The Reaping were filmed here because of detailed rooms and it also is used for movie photo shoots.  This year the theme is possession and it show cases it by infested the house with demonic entities that will be sure to make you scream for mercy!

THE DARKNESS, ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI

Halloween Attractions
The Darkness is considered America's most detailed and technologically advanced haunted house with over 200 animations, 75 CGI effects, 100's of monsters, zombies and man eating puppets and animated objects that grab and bite customers. It has been updated and now includes a haunted library filled with evil spirits, and the new Scream Zone equipped with a mega screen movie wall, roaming zombies, monsters, and demons!

EASTERN STATE PENITENTIARY'S TERRO BEHIND THE WALLS, PHILADELPHIA

Halloween Attractions
This place is freaking creepy because it is legitimately a real place where real bad things have happened! It once was home to the imprisioned bank robber Willie Sutton and mob boss Al Capone, but today the old penitentiary utilizes its spooky surroundings to create 6 different scare zones.  One of which is called Break Out and it is where the inmates and visitors try to break themselves out using barrels, ropes, tunnels, and ladders - just like they were really stuck inside.

FEAR FACTORY, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

Halloween Attractions
If you enjoy the show Walking Dead this scare park is for you.  It is located on 2.5 acres and features a post-apocalyptic setting with underground tunnels, mazes, towers, and two of the largest slides in America. The actual Fear Factory is a former cement factory and is said to be truly haunted by the people who have died there.  The owners say that people should check out the site because it is one of the only places in America that the history is more terrifying than the actual attraction.

THE HAUNTED TRAIL OF BALBOA PARK, SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

Halloween Attractions
I have been to Balboa Park before and it is gorgeous, it is hard to imagine being terrified there.  But folks are saying that when the sun goes down and night fall hits you need to leave if you can't handle being scared.  Horror movie legends such as Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees are hiding behind bushes and trees just waiting to scare you.  The main attraction here is what they call The Experiment where people journey through a horrifying maze filled with 3,500 square feet of freak infested terror.

HUNDRED ACRES MANOR, PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA

Halloween Attractions
For over a decade this attraction has been spooking people and this year they offer 6 different haunted houses including the Vodou Bayou where visitors take a tour of the deep south and have to fend off stitchers that want your body, and priestess that want your soul.   The other houses include Dead Lift, Damnation, Torture Bank, The Maze, and the Brine Slaughterhouse.

LORD CHAZ GHOST AND VAMPIRE TOURS, NEW ORLEANS, LOUSIANA

Halloween Attractions
This walking tour through the French Quarter runs year round but is best experienced during October if you are looking for more of a fear factor.  The most scary aspect of this tour is that instead of it being lead through a man made theme park, you are walking down real street, hearing real stories of infamous murders, suicides, and tragedies that have taken place exactly where you are standing.  I personally think that is far more scary than fake zombies in a corn field.

NETHERWOLD, ATLANTA, GEORGIA

Halloween Attractions
Two words: real life.  The kicker here is that all the costumes took over a year to make to ensure their real life qualities.  This attraction features the Elevator of Death where you and 19 others ride down to Vault 13 and also a Decontamination Chamber - this is one of Haunt World's scariest houses in America.

ROBERT KURTZMAN'S MAD FX LAB, CRESLINE, OHIO

Halloween Attractions
Kurtzman is a make-up effects master who has done work in the Blockbuster's From Dusk Till Dawn, Army of Darkness, New Nightmare, and Vampires.  Here you will walk through the alien lab called Freddy's Tunnel that is home to Leatherface and the Butcher's Room for a unique haunt that is sure to leave your frightened.

THE CORN MAZE AT OAKES FARM, KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE

Halloween Attractions
And finally, a more kid friendly Halloween attraction!  Here kids can follow 12 story book pages, called the Fairy Tale Trail, as their guide through the kids corn maze. Also the owners have included a huge corn pit where the kids and parents can play!

Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand

YOU NEED TO GO HERE NOW!

Abel Tasman National Park
Have you ever dreamt of visiting New Zealand??
Of course you have, everyone has.  So it is simple, just go.  Quit procrastinating, quit making excuses, buy plane tickets, and everything else will fall into place after that.  You need to go...right now...don't wait a minute longer...just go!
But where to?  How should I pick just ONE destination when the entire country is so large and diverse?
That I cannot help you with, you are going to have to either stay for a couple of months or find somewhere that offers a little bit of everything you enjoy.
If I were to buy tickets right now and had to choose my destination with no hesitation it would be Abel Tasman National Park.  Why?
The Abel Tasman National Park is New Zealand's only coastal national park and its golden sandy beaches and clear turquoise water make it one of the most popular and accessible. To explore the beauty of the Park you can access by walking into the Park from Marahau, take a cruise to one of the many beaches along the Coastal Track, sea-kayak from various beaches or fly and be dropped off at Awaroa Bay. source
Abel Tasman National Park

ABEL TASMAN NATIONAL PARK IS A DREAM COME TRUE FOR NATURE LOVERS AND ADVENTURISTS.

Abel Tasman National Park
And I am both, so this national park is everything I could want and more!
Kayaking and Hiking are two of the main staples people do when they visit here.  While kayaking, you will more than likely see pods of killer whales, enjoy friendly interaction with seals, and explore rock formations all before landing on a deserted beach for some R&R.
Abel Tasman National Park
Also, a perk of making Abel Tasman your primary destination is that you can make it a week long trip or just a day or two deal which leaves you time to see other attractions on the south island!
Abel Tasman National Park

IF YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO VISIT NEW ZEALAND, ADD ABEL TASMAN NATIONAL PARK TO YOUR "MUST SEE" LIST - YOU TRULY WILL BE BLOWN AWAY!

If you are interested in learning more about traveling to New Zealand check out our previous post about the North Island and the South Island!

Americans Need More Time Off

Take Time Off

DO YOU USE ALL OF IT?

This morning I learned a staggering statistic that in all reality broke my heart.  It was that Americans leave 429 MILLION vacation days unused each year!
Are these people crazy?!?!?  And I can bet that most of those days come from the people who say they are saving there days up but never end up using them.  What is the point of saving up vacation days if you do not have the time to take a month long vacation??  Sure you can take more mini trips throughout the year, which is great, but in all reality are you really going to take time off to use them?
Americans in general do not have the sense of adventure nor the drive to see the world the way the rest of the people in the world do.  There is such huge thinking gap between Americans and Europeans and certainly Australians as those two countries promote people taking Gap years to see the world and some require it.  I feel like Americans associate vacations with international travel and do not even consider roaming around domestically. You can travel anywhere your hear desires, simply take the time off and do it!

HOW CAN EMPLOYERS ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO TAKE MORE TIME OFF?

For starters, all companies should take a look at Afar Magazine to see what they offer their employees.
At AFAR, we provide 30 days of paid time off for all our full-time employees—and more based on seniority. We also provide them with a $2,000 stipend each year to travel to places they have never been. We believe in the power of travel. It’s good for the world and good for our bottom line. The best employees are those who are engaged with their work, engaged with the world, and energized by opportunities to see new and different things.
Wow!! What an amazing, amazing company....I wonder if they are hiring???
How do you feel about that?  Would you be more likely to take time off to vacation if your employer provided travel perks like these or would you still let your days go to waste?
For me personally, I do get much more done and have more creative/fresh ideas after I have been out and experienced new things.  Rejuvenation is extremely important because you body gets so bogged down that it significantly effects your work ability and also your general demeanor.

WHAT BETTER REASON TO TAKE TIME OFF THAN TO BE MORE PLEASANT AND PRODUCTIVE???

If you are one of the people that does not use your vacation days please, for the love of all things good, use them!  If you need some motivation check out Wanderlust Wednesday post from this week to learn about how traveling makes you a healthier person.

Most Secret U.S. Military Bases

TOP 3 MOST SECRET U.S. MILITARY BASES

Am I the only one that is obsessed with the "top secret" happenings of our government???  I find it totally fascinating that not only top secret missions take place, but also right under our nose!
I came across this article today completely by mistake when I Google searched "do military bases have classifieds" and when it came up the first in searches of course I followed the link.
Now, I have to say that the credibility of the website is a little shotty, but fun none-the-less so humor me please. Check out the full article here!

THE TOP 3 MOST SECRET U.S. MILITARY BASES

CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN COMPLEX

More than a mile inside a Colorado mountain, a complex of steel buildings sit in caves protecting them from nuclear attack. The bunker is home to a variety of top secret military analysts and was originally built to help military commanders survive a direct Soviet nuclear attack.  The Cheyenne Mountain  Complex in central Colorado still plays a key role in American air and space supremacy because it's virtually impervious to attacks on the electronics housed there. The mountain's shielding means the military can remain in contact with satellites above even if workers are completely sealed inside.  In other words, this is a facility of last resort, designed to keep running no matter what is happening outside.

most secret u.s. military bases

DUGWAY PROVING GROUNDS

The Dugway Proving Grounds in Tooele, Utah is a testing facility for military hardware. It is the size of Rhode Island and there’s every indication that anything you can imagine going on in Area 51 does go on. Initiated within two months of Pearl Harbor, there are 60 years worth of reports suggesting this is the home of next-generation weapons systems, secret aircraft, particle beams, chemical and biological weapons, and much more.
most secret u.s. military bases

RAVEN ROCK - SITE R - WWIII HIDEAWAY

The Raven Rock Alternate Command Center, or “Site R,” is the location from which U.S. forces would be commanded in the event of World War III or a nuclear war. Like Cheyenne, it is designed to be self-sufficient for 30 days after a nuclear attack.
most secret u.s. military bases

Pretty cool stuff huh??!?  We can speculate all day for the rest of our lives, but we never will truly know what goes on at these "military bases".  What I do like to think is that they are there for the greater good of America...

Playa Santana, Nicaragua

HOLD ON PLAYA SANTANA, I AM COMING!

As I sit here trying to write today's post, I keep glancing at baby monitor beside my computer because I swear that I turned the volume  all the way down.  I check it,  yep the volume is off....so how is it possible I still hear my little one fighting sleep through the speakers?!?!?!
"Damn monitor, I can't even rely on the mute button..."
Ok, finally.  There it is.  The silence.  I now get to drift into wanderlust and reflect on my past travels and go into a state of euphoria for 1 hour; I never thought that one hour could be so amazing!

TODAY I WANT TO RELIVE OUR MONTH IN PLAYA SANTANA, NICARAGUA BECAUSE THIS TIME OF YEAR I ALWAYS FIND MYSELF LONGING TO HEAD SOUTH.

I want to eat jalapeño chicken from Yolanda's, drink Toñas for breakfast, spend my afternoons taking pictures of Josh surfing; I want to  live in a bathing suit, nap in hammocks, watch every single sunset and learn Spanish from the locals.
I want to be on Nica Time.
Playa Santana, Nicaragua
Watching the sunset is an event and is something that is scheduled into one's day down there. They are something so spectacular that if you miss one you truly feel sad...
Playa Santana, Nicaragua
No baby monitor here...
Playa Santana, Nicaragua
Or here...
Playa Santana, Nicaragua
Or rush hour...
Playa Santana, Nicaragua
The only angry "person" you will come across will be a Howler Monkey and its because you got too close to his tree...
Playa Santana, Nicaragua
Everywhere you go, you will always be greeted with a smile...
Playa Santana, Nicaragua
And there is plenty of time to just breathe...
Playa Santana, Nicaragua
If you every feel lonely...visit Nicaragua. Before you leave you will have more friends than you ever had!
Playa Santana, Nicaragua
Omg the food! Yolanda's Jalapeño Chicken is stuff dreams are made out of....
Playa Santana, Nicaragua
There is nothing more relaxing than spending time in the water and here that is all you do...

ALRIGHT YA'LL, I FEEL BETTER.  NOW THAT I HAVE REMINISCED ABOUT TRAVEL PRE-BABY DAYS IN PLAYA SANTANA I AM GOOD.

And the funny thing is, these photos stir up my deep desire to take Noah there ASAP because he deserves, more than anyone, to see the beauty of the world.  Noah should have memories like these but better with US; traveling is only going to get better.
Sure, I may miss sleeping in, drinking beer for breakfast and having more than an hour to myself all day but you know what?
I'd rather wake up with the sun in Playa Santana to watch the sunrise with Noah, to see his eyes light up when he sees the ocean's calmness first thing in the morning, and teaching him about the Earth's beauty that surrounds him.
To me, that is priceless...Looks like I am booking a trip soon!
