We're Americans

I HAVE BEEN TRULY INSPIRED THIS MORNING - BY A SPEECH LT. COLONEL OLIVER NORTH MADE ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A PATRIOT, ABOUT WHAT OUR SOLDIERS ON THE FRONT LINES REALLY DO, A SPEECH ABOUT HOW WE, AS AMERICANS, SHOULD BE PROUD OF OUR GREAT COUNTRY.

Whether you are proud to be an American, someone who could care less or someone who is ashamed of the Red White and Blue, I hope after you watch this speech you will be inspired too.

NOW TELL ME THAT DIDN'T MAKE YOUR EYES WATER AND GIVE YOU GOOSEBUMPS?

Lt. Colonel Oliver North spoke so eloquently, had such sincerity in his voice and that really helped him portray his message.  We as Americans need to always support our troops, be grateful for our freedom and show pride of our nationality because we truly are from somewhere great!
What really got me about the speech was when he spoke of the immaturities of teenage boys that who, in just a few years, go from not sharing a candy bar to sharing their last MRE with the enemy or giving their last drop of water to a wounded solider.
That is what makes me proud...
Americans may not have the best reputation but we really do have the best morals, beliefs, and military in the world!

Why I hate The Wind

DEAR WIND, WHY DO YOU TORTURE ME SO?

Wind
This morning, as I took my son for our daily walk, the wind was exceptionally refreshing.  It had a constant presence, but would occasionally say, "Hey, wake up!", by lifting the hair off my shoulders.  As if under a trance, my mind began to wander to my favorite places where wind has touched my soul.
I found myself walking down the beach in California collecting shells at sunset, but then on the next breeze I was just waking up in our tent to the sound of sea lions while overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur.  I stayed there for a while....because it just felt so good.  I knew on the next gust of wind I would be sitting on a bluff in Yosemite with my husband watching the eagles fly and I was right.  I could feel the sunny breeze flowing through my hair as I smelled the sweet scent of the Elderberry bush beside me...I was in heaven.
Then, I was back in reality.  Walking down my old tree covered street to the river with my little boy and dog.  I wonder if when we leave here, the wind will bring me back to Riverside Drive, the way it takes me to California??

I HAVE A LOVE/HATE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE WIND.

LOVE

I love the way the wind it touches my soul every time it caresses my face.
I love the way the wind magically takes me all over the world.
I love the wind for carrying sweet, nostalgic smells to me that make me smile.
I love the wind for all its power - the respect it demands and yet the love it shares.

HATE

I hate the way the wind makes me want to spread my wings and fly - it makes me unsettled.  It makes my mind wander and yearn to be anywhere other than where I am at the moment.
I hate the wind for being able to travel the world for free.  For being able to touch all the beautiful things in life by going which ever way it blows.
I hate the wind for having so much freedom.  Some days I wish the wind would just swoop me up and take me on the greatest adventure - we would soar through the clouds, skim the surface of the ocean, ride the waves, scale mountains, and kiss fields of flowers.
I hate the wind for making me wish I could pack everything up and move to a deserted beach where I could live forever with the wind.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE WIND, WHERE DOES IT TAKE YOU WHEN IT TOUCHES YOUR FACE??

Life Onboard Aircraft Carriers

I LIVE IN THE HAMPTON ROADS AREA OF VIRGINIA, WHICH IS A HEAVILY POPULATED MILITARY AREA AND ALSO SERVES AS A HOME BASE FOR MANY OF OUR NATION'S AIRCRAFT CARRIERS.

aircraft carriers
Last night I was driving over one of the local bridges as I noticed two aircraft carriers in the harbor and it made my mind begin to wander,  "What is it like to live on a city at sea?"  At first, my thought was that it had to be thrilling, amazing, what seamen always have dreamed of.  And honestly, that is what I believed all night and contemplated in anticipation of this blog post.
The amazing life onboard an aircraft carriersthat was my original title. But after doing my due diligence, I have learned that yes it is an amazing and a spectacular experience, but it is far more hard than it is enjoyable.
So without further adieu...

TRUTH BEHIND LIVING ON AN AIRCRAFT CARRIERS

  1. There are between 5,000 and 6,000 people living in tight quarters onboard these cities at sea, so if you do not like people, I suggest choosing a different career path.
  2. Unless you work on the flight deck, hangar or fantail, you could go weeks without seeing daylight.  The main deck is a dangerous place and only has room for the designated people who have a purpose up there.  So simply put, if you do not belong up there you are not wanted.
  3. Claustrophobics need not apply.  Life onboard an aircraft carriers is more cramped than Time Square on New Year's Eve!  If you do not mind squeezing past your co-workers in narrow corridors, constantly climbing stairs, and sharing one large "bedroom" with 60 other people then aircraft carrier life is for you.
  4. When you do get to go on deck you will probably be doing exercises where you get pepper sprayed in the face and then made to defend yourself against an enemy.
  5. Life onboard aircraft carriers is not for the faint of heart nor weak.  Only the strongest of the strong will be able to call these $6.5 Billion dollar supercarriers home.
  6. If you enjoy a quiet life....bring ear plugs.  No matter where you go on the ship you are going to constantly be plagued with the noise of jets taking off and landing.
  7. Efficiency and attention to detail need to posses your soul.  If you are ok with real pressures from a job and are good at constantly being on point - you have found your home.

DID YOU KNOW???

USS George H.W. Bush is the tenth of the line of Nimitz-class supercarriers, which means it's also one of the largest warships in the entire world at approximately 1,092 feet long with a displacement of nearly 100,000 tons. Despite the size, its two nuclear reactors can push the carrier to nearly 35 mph (30+ knots) while carrying more than 5,500 sailors and pilots and numerous aircraft on its 4.5-acre flight deck.

Find the Cruise of your Dreams!

HIT THE OPEN SEAS AND EXPLORE THE WORLD - FIND THE CRUISE OF YOUR DREAMS BY EXPLORING NEW PORTS OF CALL FROM THE GALAPAGOS TO THAITI TO ST. MAARTEN TO AROUND THE WORLD!

find the cruise of your dreams
St. Lucia is one of my dream cruise destinations!
I love, love, love cruises!  How else can you see multiple destinations at such an affordable price?  Seriously though, if island hopping the Caribbean Islands is something you are into you should consider a cruise.
And it really is so incredibly easy to find the cruise of your dreams because the number of cruise companies has increased significantly over the past few years.  You now have companies that specialize in specific regions, different aspects of travel, themes, packages, etc, so however you want to tailor your cruise there is a company that can do it.
With that being said, it can get a little over whelming trying to figure out which cruise line is right for you...especially for Caribbean travel...and that is why U.S. News and World Report put together a comparative list of the 2015 Best Cruise Lines in the Caribbean.
They go through the top 15 by giving you a brief description of what they are known for, then you can click on the link to get even more specific ratings such as Expert Ratings, Traveler Ratings, and Health Ratings.  Check the article out here to find the cruise of your dreams!

ANOTHER METHOD OF FINDING THE CRUISE OF YOUR DREAMS IS BY CONTACTING A TRAVEL CONSULTANT WITH UNITED MILITARY TRAVEL.

They first will find out what your pre-approval loan amount is and then you two will go into details about the area, activities, trip duration, amenities, and such to completely customize the cruise of your dreams.
United Military Travel finances cruises with all of the major cruise lines including: Carnival Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Costa Cruises, Cunard Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruises, and many other smaller cruise lines and charter cruises. Many cruise lines offer military discounted cruise fares and we can help you book these military discounted cruise tickets! United Military Travel's knowledgeable staff is able to inform you about the cheapest way to enjoy your cruise, while keeping an affordable monthly payment. We know travel tips and secrets to keep the cost of your cruise low from the many years of cruising and booking experience our staff has.  source

ANOTHER IMPORTANT FACTOR IN DESIGNING THE CRUISE OF YOUR DREAMS IS WHEN TO CRUISE!

YOU NEED TO CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING FACTORS BEFORE BOOKING: PRICE, WEATHER, HOLIDAYS, SUMMER, AND PASSENGERS.

Price: The cheapest rates for Caribbean cruises are typically offered between September and early January with the exception of holiday weeks. Bargains are also found between mid April and the end of May. Bargains are particularly good during the fall, which is peak hurricane season. If you don't mind a possible itinerary change or cancellation of the cruise because of a storm take advantage of these rates. You may also miss a port over the winter when seas have a greater chance of being rough, which is why the bargains run through the beginning of January.
Weather: The Caribbean is temperate all year round, but it can get chilly in the winter and make swimming uncomfortable. So if you planned on spending your vacation taking advantage of the region's excellent snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities, I would reconsider visiting in the winter. Sail during the spring or fall if you want to do water sports in warm temperatures but don't want to deal with excessive summer heat. Hurricane season extends through November, so it's best to choose spring to avoid potential tropical storms.  Just like with any other method of travel, you are at a higher risk for flight delays or cancellations if you sail during the winter, so I recommend buying trip insurance.
Holidays: Do you love holidays? Many cruise lines decorate their ships for the Thanksgiving through New Years Day holiday season and have special on-board activities.  Or do you hate holidays?  Taking a cruise during the holiday season could mean you have to do less at home and your kids still get the festive feeling!
If you have children, they usually have some time off school during this period. They can cruise around Thanksgiving, Christmas or the New Year without missing schoolwork. School breaks also coincide with Easter and other holidays such as Presidents' Day. You will pay a premium to sail to the Caribbean during this period, but the trade-off in special celebrations or minimal disruption to your children's school schedule may be worth it.
Summer: Unless your children attend year round school, most schools have a break between May and August. Also, these months are when most employers make employees take their vacation time and the cruise lines know this - thus you will find their highest prices are during the summer months.  But this may be the best time for you if you're under work constraints or have school-age child - just be prepared to pay premium price.
Passengers: If you prefer not to encounter a lot of children on your cruise you should sail during the school year. Cruises to the Caribbean usually last at least five to seven days. There are more adult passengers during this period because some parents don't want to take their kids out of school for that long....also its a nice escape for the parents!  Most of the kids on board will be age five or below, and the overall passenger count will be lower. This means shorter waits for tendering into ports and less crowded dining rooms and other on-board areas.

OK - YOU HAVE ALL THE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO FIND THE CRUISE OF YOUR DREAMS, SO GET TO PLANNING!!!

A Journey through Frankfurt

WELCOME TO FRANKFURT,THE MOST INTERNATIONAL CITY IN GERMANY AND THE SMALLEST METROPOLIS IN THE WORLD.

Whether you are visiting Frankfurt on business, it is the largest financial center on the continent after all, or there for pleasure, you will find the city offers amazing guided tours, plenty of cultural enjoyment, a a variety of globally diverse restaurants, and one of a kind shopping opportunities!
Frankfurt reminds me of Vancouver in the sense that it is a melting pot of nationalities.  Almost one in three people living in Frankfurt do not hold a German passport.  That is why you will always find a restaurant that serves your favorite food: Chinese, Thai, French, American, Indian...you name it Frankfurt has got it.  So don't worry if you do not speak German, you are bound to find someone who speaks your native language!  The primary reason this bustling city has become so diverse is from its long history of being a trading center, people have been living here for centuries co-existing peacefully with other nationalities - how beautiful is that.  The rest of the world could really learn something from Frankfurt.

I AM NOT GOING TO FILL THIS POST WITH THE PLETHORA OF ACTIVITIES FRANKFURT OFERS, BUT RATHER SUGGEST TWO ACTIVITIES THAT HAVE TO BE ON YOUR ITINERARY.

FIRST, OLD SACHSENHAUSEN

Imagine old school Germany, narrow cobblestone lanes with small squares with fountains and frame houses.  That is what Old Sachsenhausen is all about.  In the large and small Rittergasse you will find picturesque pubs, restaurants, cheese shops, and boutiques
frankfurt
lined up with people sitting out front on wooden benches enjoying local apple wine.  Also, here you can find German specialties such as beef with green sauce, handmade pretzels and much more!  The locals here are friendly, festive, and welcoming to visitors.  During the summer you can find them in the street celebrating in their fountains, but if you don't want to get wet avoid these areas because they will drag you into the fun! Simply put, if you are looking to spend some time in original German pubs drinking local craft beers and eating authentic German food, add Old Sachsenhausen to your itinerary.

SECOND, BOAT TOURS ON THE MAIN AND RHINE RIVERS

Honestly, I suggest taking a boat tour in any city that offers them because they are so much fun and a fantastic way to tour the city!  What better way to beat the city heat in the summer time than getting out on the water for a couple of hours.  There are two rivers that cut through and around Frankfurt, the Main and Rhine Rivers.  There are various excursions for "little cruises and big tours" that include trips to Offenbach or the Grisheim locks.  On a day trip, the boat takes you up the Main to Seligenstadt and Aschaffenburg or takes you down the Main to its mouth and then on the Rhine to cities like Mainz, Eltville, and Rudesheim.  I suggest taking the down the river trip because it will take you to more places and you can say you cruised two different rivers in Germany!
frankfurt

SO NOW THAT YOU HAVE SIPPED HOMEMADE APPLE WINE, ATE HAND TWISTED PRETZELS, AND CRUISED UP AND DOWN FRANKFURT YOU SHOULD SPEND SOME TIME IMMERSING YOURSELF IN GERMAN CULTURE.

Head over to Museumsufer, where 11 well-known museums are lined up or take your pick from the 50 other museums and exhibition halls in the immediate area!
