Chris Ring - Swim For Their Sacrifice

Chris Ring

THE 2015 LEGACIES ALIVE CHALLENGE IS CALLED SWIM FOR THEIR SACRIFICE AND IS ALL ABOUT CHRIS RING AS HE SWIMS THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE MISSISSIPPI TO HONOR OUR FALLEN SOLDIERS AND THE GOLD STAR FAMILIES THEY LEFT BEHIND.

 Chris Ring
Chris, after over 10 years of service in the Navy and deployments to Iraq and Afganistan, received an honorable discharge.  Since then him and his wife have pursued their dream of touching as many lives that were left behind from the fallen soldiers as possible.  After serving in the service for so long and having two deployments to two of the most dangerous places on earth, I bet Chris had to deal with losing friends that he held close and wanting to help their families deal with the pain.
The mission is to honor the sacrifice of our nation’s fallen heroes and the Gold Star Families they left behind. During the 6 month journey Chris and our Swim Team will meet and connect with Gold Star Families along the way. By leveraging media and supporters our goal is to raise national awareness as to what a Gold Star symbolizes and when the average American hears the term Gold Star Family or see’s the Gold Star symbol they know the sacrifice these families have had to endure.  Legacies Alive
On June 6th, the anniversary of D-Day, Chris began his 2,552 mile swim down the Mississippi starting in Lake Itasca Minnesota and will finish at Mile Marker 0 where the river meets the Gulf of Mexico.
Chris's goal is to spend 6.5 hours swimming and travel 14 miles a day in order to finish in mid-late November.  According to USA Today, who did an interview with him, he said that  "he tries to have one bigger meal per day, but it's difficult to eat "real food" at campsite every morning, and he doesn't want to lose swimming time to eat lunch.  He said that he has lost 20 pounds since starting the swim."

DO YOU HAVE A DESIRE, LIKE CHRIS RING, THAT YOU COULD COMMIT TO THIS FIERCELY?

If you are along the Mississippi and happen to see him swimming by you will notice that he hands are wrapped in tape and, as a result of the rocks and rapids of the mighty river, his wet suit is full of holes.  But Chris is dedicated.  Whenever he needs a boost of motivation he looks over at the kayak that follows along side of him and looks at all the signatures of the families he has already met with.  Or he turns on his bag and eats a protein bar while still swimming.
Each day, when Chris is done swimming, he meets with family member of the fallen soldiers and has them sign his kayak.  He ultimately just sits with the people as they talk about their loved one(s) and describe how nice it is to know that the fallen are not forgotten about because they never forget.
Chris Ring
I think anyone who has lost a loved one can relate to the joy you get just simply by talking about the deceased.  When I talk about my mother, especially to someone who knew her, my soul lights up because I feel that she is not forgotten.

What To Do If Your Passport Is Lost Or Stolen

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PASSPORT IS STOLEN GUIDE

what do it passport is lost or stolen
I’m not sure about the other travelers out there, but as a traveler—and an expat living abroad—I frequently have passport panic before and on trips, wherein I wake up in the middle of the night, freaking out about the location of that all-important document. Have passport paranoia, too? CHRIS CIOLLI
I too have felt like this when traveling, especially during one trip to Nicaragua and our accommodations were less than "fair".  Someone could easily enter our room by removing the flat panels on the windows and unlocking the door from the outside.  How do I know this?  Because I had to do it when I locked myself out.  I would find myself anticipating the situation of a a lost passport and trying to put together a plan of action just in case that when I returned to our room our books of freedom were gone.
The uneasy, paranoid feeling is no fun and I wish that for no one while they are on vacation or living abroad.

THAT IS WHY I PUT TOGETHER THIS "WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PASSPORT IS STOLEN" GUIDE....I HOPE YOU NEVER HAVE TO USE IT.

Before your trip
First - Travel Insurance.  I know, I know....it is the very last thing that you want to pay for BUT believe me that if you find yourself in a sticky situation you will be soooo glad that you have it.  Find a good policy that will cover any expenses you will incur from your passport being lost or stolen.
Second - You WILL need to take a visit to your local embassy if your passport is lost or stolen so before you leave your home country write down the address, phone number, and email address of the embassy or consulate nearest your destination, and register with them before you go.
Third - Bring along a secondary form of identification PLUS a couple of passport photos (the extras from when you received your passport will work fine).  These are important to have just in case they can issue you one there.
Fourth - Make copies of all your personal information and leave them will a reliable contact back home.  I would suggest photo copying your identification card, passport, social security card, birth certificate, medical insurance cards, visa information, travel itinerary, and also any travel insurance information.  Whomever you leave this information with, make sure they are someone you will be able to reach easily!  Also, bring those copies with you as well.  Store them separate from your actual passport for safe keepings.
Fifth - If keeping up with all that paperwork sounds daunting you can always upload them to the internet in a safe password protected format.  If you are going to have access to the internet and are tech savvy then this option would be for you because you could also just carry around a USB to that contains them as well.
During your trip
If you know for sure that your passport was stolen immediately report it to the police then declare it stolen or lost to embassy or consulate.
Make an appointment to apply for a replacement passport (this is where having all those i.d. docs will come in handy) - you will have to prove your identify to get a replacement.
Side note: while this may be a HUGE ordeal to you it is not.  Since it is not a life threatening emergency you will not receive expedited service and if you loose it over a holiday you will just have to wait.
The "oh sh*t" scenario
What if your passport AND all forms of money is stolen?  This is when you use your "call a friend" card and the embassy will help you do that.  But then what if the person you call cannot pay for your new passport and you miss your flight home?  You will be obliged to book a flight back home on a loan from the government and a temporary passport, but just remember it is a LOAN and has to be paid back.  Defaulting on the loan will result in the inability to get a new passport, bad credit, and no more international travel.

I HOPE THIS "WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PASSPORT IS LOST OR STOLEN GUIDE" HELPS YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR TRIP AND WORST CASE SCENARIOS!

Nizuc Resort and Spa, Cancun Mexico

Nizuc Resort and Spa

WHEN YOU PICTURE CANCUN DO YOU ENVISION HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS DRUNK OFF CHEAP TEQUILA STUMBLING OUT OF SENOR FROGS?
WELL FORGET ALL YOU THINK YOU KNOW ABOUT CANCUN AND ENVISION A SOFTER SIDE AT NIZUC RESORT AND SPA.

Joseph Diaz just wrote an article for Afar Magazine entitled, "This Hotel Will Change the Way You Look At Cancun," in hopes to persuade others to see Cancun the way he does.  Joseph does not have to share air with drunk teenagers or eat at average buffets when he vacations in Mexico because he stays at Nizuc Resort and Spa .  Nizuc is a upscale resort that offers luxury, elegance, and seclusion that will make you feel miles away from the chaos yet is only a short ride from he airport.
Nizuc resort and spa is nestled perfectly on a 29 acre natural reserve that offers two SECLUDED beaches both of which are perfect for swimming.

JOSEPH EXPLAINS THAT THESE FOUR REASONS ARE WHY YOU SHOULD DITCH YOUR PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS ABOUT CANCUN AND WHY YOU SHOULD STAY AT NIZUC RESORT AND SPA...

1. The rooms. Located on the 5th floor of one of the residence towers (they’re only five stories tall), my Penthouse suite with floor-to-ceiling windows provided blood-pressure reducing views of the beautiful Caribbean. We had more space than we knew what to do with and my private terrace with infinity plunge pool and outdoor shower were luxurious touches.
Nizuc Resort and Spa
2. The food. No mediocre buffet dinners here. With six world-class restaurants, each with their own kitchen, NIZUC invests heavily in the quality of its cuisine. My two favorites were Ni, a nod to Peruvian cuisine—which has some of the best ceviche I’ve ever had—and La Punta. Both are extremely laid back and casual.
3. The tranquil ambience. The words “Spring Break” have probably never been uttered on the property. Before becoming NIZUC, the property was slated to become an Aman, until some financial trouble. NIZUC took advantage of the opportunity. They inherited the serenity, simplicity, and modernism that Aman is well known for: reflection pools, clean lines, and generous space convert chaos into tranquility. My favorite example is NIZUC’s spa. When spa therapists tell you to arrive an hour before your treatment to enjoy the facilities, I usually ignore them. Doing that at NIZUC is a major faux pas. Their state-of-the-art hydrotherapy facilities including beautiful steam room, plunge pools, and high-pressure water faucets (be careful where you aim) are some of the best in the world. I came away from the experience wanting more.
Nizuc Resort and Spa
4. The staff. Everyone is so gracious and willing to help. But they’re not overbearing—a quality 5-star luxury is sometimes notorious for. The team literally greets you with hand on heart. I had the opportunity to spend the most time with NIZUC’s tennis pro, Karl Vukobrat. NIZUC has two tennis courts and Karl’s enthusiasm got me out on the court three early mornings in a row for a private lesson.
Spending three nights at NIZUC provided a much-needed escape. It takes 3 hours and a couple of Xanax to get to the Hamptons, and five hours door-to-door to get to NIZUC. So when you tell your friends you’re going to Cancun, they can judge away—I’m sure you’ll be the one with the smile on your face when drinking that delicious mezcal margarita from the perch of your private infinity pool, taking in those tranquil turquoise hues of the Caribbean.

One of my primary ways of deciding on where to vacation is through articles like this one Joseph just wrote.  To me it is better than a review on Trip Advisor because it is thoroughly written - not just a rating. I want to know exactly why I should choose one place over another and I want to hear it directly from someone who stayed there...my money is precious so making a educated decision is key.

Why International Airports Beat U.S. Airports

WHY DO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS BEAT U.S. AIRPORTS???

why international airports beat U.S. airports
As an experienced traveler, I have seen airports that make your jaw drop and I have also seen airports that make you question whether or not you just board the plane.  It always makes me wonder just why that particular airport is getting left behind in the rat race and what are the driving factors behind airports to keep up with the rest of the world.
The Answer: Gumption
:initiative; aggressiveness; resourcefulness
:courage; spunk; guts
:common sense; shrewdness

You can look through any of the top rated airports across the globe and you will notice one distinct commonality: they are all international.
Off the top of your head I want you to think about which airlines are the top rated in the world...
Did you think of United Arab Emirates, Singapore Air, Qatar Airways??
If so, then you are 100% correct!  These airlines and airports are always on top of the game and are constantly evolving to bring their customers only the finest in travel and luxury.  For example, Changi Airport (Singapore) has a pool and butterfly garden in it and Qatar just announced their new HUGE investment in "user experience" just last week.
When was the last time you heard of U.S. airports revamping or investing into "user experience"?  The primary focus of U.S. airports is how they can better profit from airport traffic and the ongoing struggle of better airport security.
The U.S. Airports big wigs really need to sit down with the other big wigs and learn their strategies of how they make money while giving their flyers the best of the best.  Domestic travelers deserve that too!

INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS BEAT U.S. AIRPORTS SIMPLY BECAUSE WE LACK GUMPTION.

As soon as we grow some cahones, gain the drive to want to change our airports, and learn how to be successful our U.S. airports will start to keep up with the international big wigs.

According to Skytrax, The World Airport Awards, the world's top 10 airports of 2015 are:
Singapore Changi Airport, or simply Changi Airport, is the primary civilian airport for Singapore, and one of the largest transportation hubs in Southeast Asia.
 INCHEON INT'L AIRPORT
MUNICH AIRPORT
HONG KONG INT'L AIRPORT
TOKYO INT'L AIRPORT HANEDA
ZURICH AIRPORT
CENTRAL JAPAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
LONDON HEATHROW AIRPORT
AMSTERDAM SCHIPHOL AIRPORT
BEIJING CAPITAL INT'L AIRPORT
And if you are curious, the top rated domestic airports are:
Cincinnati
Denver
Seattle-Tacoma
Halifax Stanfield
Minneapolis
Detroit
Raleigh-Durham
Charlotte/Douglas
Billy Bishop Toronto
Philadelphia

The Making of Harry Potter

the making of harry potter

THE MAKING OF HARRY POTTER - LONDON

Last night I was watching Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and it made me wonder how the movies were made and if they were in fact filmed in England.  Sure enough they were, in London to be exact.  Warner Brother Studios has opened up the film set, The Making of Harry Potter, to the general public as just another attraction that is located just right outside of the city.
As much as I wish I could say that I have visited this magical place, I cannot.  But I did find someone who has and her name is Brooke Saward!
Brooke is the author/owner of World of Wanderlust and her job...yes full time job...is to travel the world to blog about her travel adventures and write summaries/reviews on her experiences.  You have to start following her...She is amazing....
Check out her review on The Making of Harry Potter to find out tips on the best way to arrive and what to expect throughout the guided tour on her blog here!

Fall Equinox

Fall Equinox

TODAY, SEPTEMBER 23, MARKS THE YEAR'S FALL EQUINOX WHICH BRINGS SHORTER DAYS, LONGER NIGHTS AND THE SEASON OF HARVEST FOR FARMERS.

There are two equinoxes during the year: spring and fall.  They occur when the equator passes the centre of the sun. This is when the north and south poles of the Earth are not tilted towards or away from the sun, as at other times, but are aligned so as to give, theoretically, the same amount of daylight in both of the Earth's hemispheres.
Fall Equinox

THE FALL EQUINOX MEANS TWO THINGS FOR TRAVELERS: FOOD AND COLORS.

Aka festivals and outdoor adventures!
Autumn is the season all farmers, wine and beer makers, and chefs anticipate because you will not find food any fresher than now.  It is a time for them to hit the streets and share their harvest and talent with the world through festivals!
For a complete list of food and wine festivals here in the United States and internationally, check out Gayot (Guy-OH) - a website that is an internationally renowned and professional guide to dining, hotels, travel and lifestyle, including spas, movies and automobiles.
Gayot's  Seasonal Tip:
Truffles and chanterelles are unearthed this month. Also, take a moment to pick a few pears and crack open some Dungeness crab!

WHEN I IMAGINE LIFE AFTER THE FALL EQUINOX, I IMAGINE ACRES UPON ACRES OF GRAPES BEING HARVESTED THAT ARE DESTINED TO BE TURNED INTO  BEAUTIFUL WINES.

If could choose any festival to attend this fall it would be the Sonoma County Harvest Fair because me and wine...well we are like peas and carrots!
The Sonoma County Harvest Fair celebrates its 40th year. Attendees will enjoy savoring fine wines, award-winning beers and culinary creations at this complete farm-to-table experience in Santa Rosa. In the three-day, activity-packed event, the Grand Harvest Tasting Pavilion, a returning favorite, features samples of varietals from more than 150 participating Sonoma County wineries and gourmet pairings from winners of the Professional Wine, Food and Restaurant Competitions. Each day will offer a slightly different food pairing, so guests are sure to satisfy their appetite. For those looking to take home souvenirs, artisan goods and wares can be purchased at the Wine Country Marketplace. For more information, visit the Sonoma County Harvest Fair official website
If you are stationed California or any western state you are in the prime location for festivals and outdoor adventure opportunities.
Plan a trip with your buddies to go camping in San Onofre State Beach California for a weekend or hit the trails in the Blue Ridge Parkway or any national park.

Must See's Of New Bern, NC

NOT ONLY IS NEW BERN, NC MY HOME TOWN, BUT IT IS ALSO A PREMIER VACATION DESTINATION ALONG THE EAST COAST.

 new bern, nc
If you are planning a trip to New Bern please consider visiting my must see's in the town and surrounding area!

DOWNTOWN, NEW BERN

A trip to downtown New Bern is obligatory as it is the premier attraction, but for good reason!  If you can find a parking spot on Middle Street I suggest starting your walking tour there...oh and come hungry.
new bern, nc
No matter what time of the day you will find something delicious to eat in downtown!
You can start off your day by having breakfast at Baker's Kitchen; I suggest indulging in their famous french toast with a side of dutch potatoes and a glass of sweet tea....yes sweet tea is good any time of the day! There may be a little bit of a wait, usually 20 minutes or less, but that is because all good things are worth waiting for.
Now that your belly and you are ready for some adventure, walk directly across the street to Surf, Wind and Fire and stock up on all your outdoor activity gear.
One thing I do suggest is booking a SUP tour through Stand Up Outfitters on Craven Street for a guiding stand up paddle boarding tour of our beautiful area.  The guides are licensed and top rated and will give you a fun, educational, and exciting tour that is well worth every penny!  And if you are into yoga, they offer SUP Yoga classes too!
new bern, nc
If water sports and outdoor activities aren't your thing, no worries!  Head over to the Pepsi Shop to learn all about the birth of Pepsi, New Bern is its birthplace after all, while enjoying a bag of popcorn and cold soda!
new bern, nc
You also should definitely check out Tryon Palace!
new bern, nc
Royal Governor William Tryon and his family brought architect John Hawks from London to design and build the Georgian-style structure. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace served as the first permanent capitol of North Carolina and home to the Tryon family.
Tryon Palace was the site of the first sessions of the general assembly for the State of North Carolina following the revolution and housed the state governors until 1794. In 1798, fire destroyed the original Palace building. An extensive 30-year campaign to rebuild the Palace and restore the grounds was launched by the people of New Bern, state leaders, world craftsmen, and generous, dedicated citizens such as Mrs. James Edwin Latham. Their efforts led to the triumphal reopening of the Palace in 1959. Today, the Palace lives on as a testament to history, community and rebirth.
I could go on and on about each individual attraction in downtown New Bern but I will leave you with just one last suggestion.  Carolina Creations.  This fine art contemporary store is full of funky, fun, quirky, beautiful, and handmade pieces of art that range from wood, canvas, sculptures, jewelry, and everything in between.  They have done a fantastic job at choosing pieces that truly reflect North Carolina culture...specifically New Bern style!

THE CRYSTAL COAST

new bern, nc
A stay in New Bern just would not be complete without a trip a little further east to the Crystal Coast! New Bern is just 45 minutes away from some of the most pristine beaches in the nation like Atlantic Beach, Pine Knolls Shores, and Emerald Isle.  Plus Morehead City and Beaufort are two towns that you would die if you didn't get a chance to see!
Have you ever watched a Nicholas Sparks movie and wondered where the inspiration of the coastal towns came from?  Well folks, it is all from the Crystal Coast!
Imagine small town southern sea towns full of local seafood restaurants, local boutiques, cobblestone roads, and water views for miles and that is what you will find just 45 minutes east of New Bern!
If this is a once in a lifetime visit for you I highly, highly, highly suggest visiting Cape Lookout National Seashore.  You will absolutely be blown away with natural beauty and just may never want to leave our beautiful little coast!
new bern, nc
I feel that is best to spend two days at the minimum exploring the Crystal Coast because you will need ample time to explore the beaches and towns....plan accordingly!

UNITED MILITARY TRAVEL IS VERY FAMILIAR WITH NEW BERN AND WOULD LOVE TO HELP YOU BOOK YOUR TRIP TO THIS FINE SOUTHERN CITY!

United Military Travel can book your accommodations, car rental, and flights if needed - just apply here or give us a call at 866-582-9579 for more information!

Tsunami Warnings on Vacation

TSUNAMI WARNINGS ON VACATION...

tsunami warnings on vacation
Projected areas in danger of a tsunami
Yesterday a powerful 8.3-magnitude earthquake struck Chile leaving 5 dead and millions of people evacuated from their homes.  Chile had just recovered from a natural disaster when the earthquake happened and just days before their national holiday where families get together to celebrate life.  Now instead of celebrations, Chileans are going to be searching for family members and friends while they are displaced from their homes.
The U.S. Geological Survey issued tsunami alerts for Chile, Hawaii, Southern California and also Australia and New Zealand, but have so far seen no immediate danger.  They are strongly warning beach goers to stay out of the water totally because currents are going to be flowing differently and with more force.  They also advice that all coastal areas and harbor be completely avoided for the next day or two in case a rouge wave where to arrive.

MY QUESTION IS: HOW DO TOURISTS DEAL WITH TSUNAMI WARNINGS ON VACATION?

From what it appears, resorts and hotels dread having to warn their guests about the tsunami warning and some just flat out don't.  Many of the high end hotels and resorts area good about getting the word out to their guests, but some of the lower ends do not even issue the warning at all.  I suppose the hotels that keep it quiet assume their guest do not watch the news or have the internet...
I grew up in the coastal community of the Outer Banks so I know all about tourist on days when the ocean is "red flagged" aka to rough get in.  The stores, restaurants, attractions all get bombarded with hoards of people because the main attraction is unavailable.
The same is what happens when you get a tsunami warning on vacation, people leave the beach area and head inland.  That is bad for the businesses directly on the beach, but good for the inlanders...Take advantage of this time to see the local area that is away from your resort and go have an adventure!
tsunami warnings on vacation
People stay on higher grounds in a tsunami safety zone after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook the region, in Iquique city, north of Santiago March 16, 2014. The strong quake struck off northern Chile on Sunday evening, triggering a preventive evacuation of part of the coastal area but not causing any injuries or damage to the country's crucial copper mines. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami expected.
How about an evacuation?
What are you suppose to do when you are in Hawaii, thousands of miles from home with no place to evacuate to yet you cannot stay where you are???
Two words: TRAVEL INSURANCE
You do whatever you have to do to stay safe, spend whatever it cost to get your family away from the danger zone and because you have travel insurance you will be reimbursed.  When booking vacations you may feel like you do not need it, but in that off chance a natural disaster does happen you will come out on top.
More than likely the hotel will already have an evacuation plan ready for all their guest and you will go with everyone else to the predetermined safe destination.  My advice is to not try and fight this and decide that you know a safer place, because realistically you do not.  You are a visitor in the area so go with what the experts have deemed safe - it may save your life!
