NOT ONLY IS NEW BERN, NC MY HOME TOWN, BUT IT IS ALSO A PREMIER VACATION DESTINATION ALONG THE EAST COAST.
If you are planning a trip to New Bern please consider visiting my must see's in the town and surrounding area!
DOWNTOWN, NEW BERN
A trip to downtown New Bern is obligatory as it is the premier attraction, but for good reason! If you can find a parking spot on Middle Street I suggest starting your walking tour there...oh and come hungry.
No matter what time of the day you will find something delicious to eat in downtown!
You can start off your day by having breakfast at Baker's Kitchen; I suggest indulging in their famous french toast with a side of dutch potatoes and a glass of sweet tea....yes sweet tea is good any time of the day! There may be a little bit of a wait, usually 20 minutes or less, but that is because all good things are worth waiting for.
Now that your belly and you are ready for some adventure, walk directly across the street to Surf, Wind and Fire and stock up on all your outdoor activity gear.
One thing I do suggest is booking a SUP tour through Stand Up Outfitters on Craven Street for a guiding stand up paddle boarding tour of our beautiful area. The guides are licensed and top rated and will give you a fun, educational, and exciting tour that is well worth every penny! And if you are into yoga, they offer SUP Yoga classes too!
If water sports and outdoor activities aren't your thing, no worries! Head over to the Pepsi Shop to learn all about the birth of Pepsi, New Bern is its birthplace after all, while enjoying a bag of popcorn and cold soda!
You also should definitely check out Tryon Palace!
Royal Governor William Tryon and his family brought architect John Hawks from London to design and build the Georgian-style structure. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace served as the first permanent capitol of North Carolina and home to the Tryon family.Tryon Palace was the site of the first sessions of the general assembly for the State of North Carolina following the revolution and housed the state governors until 1794. In 1798, fire destroyed the original Palace building. An extensive 30-year campaign to rebuild the Palace and restore the grounds was launched by the people of New Bern, state leaders, world craftsmen, and generous, dedicated citizens such as Mrs. James Edwin Latham. Their efforts led to the triumphal reopening of the Palace in 1959. Today, the Palace lives on as a testament to history, community and rebirth.
I could go on and on about each individual attraction in downtown New Bern but I will leave you with just one last suggestion. Carolina Creations. This fine art contemporary store is full of funky, fun, quirky, beautiful, and handmade pieces of art that range from wood, canvas, sculptures, jewelry, and everything in between. They have done a fantastic job at choosing pieces that truly reflect North Carolina culture...specifically New Bern style!
THE CRYSTAL COAST
A stay in New Bern just would not be complete without a trip a little further east to the Crystal Coast! New Bern is just 45 minutes away from some of the most pristine beaches in the nation like Atlantic Beach, Pine Knolls Shores, and Emerald Isle. Plus Morehead City and Beaufort are two towns that you would die if you didn't get a chance to see!
Have you ever watched a Nicholas Sparks movie and wondered where the inspiration of the coastal towns came from? Well folks, it is all from the Crystal Coast!
Imagine small town southern sea towns full of local seafood restaurants, local boutiques, cobblestone roads, and water views for miles and that is what you will find just 45 minutes east of New Bern!
If this is a once in a lifetime visit for you I highly, highly, highly suggest visiting Cape Lookout National Seashore. You will absolutely be blown away with natural beauty and just may never want to leave our beautiful little coast!
I feel that is best to spend two days at the minimum exploring the Crystal Coast because you will need ample time to explore the beaches and towns....plan accordingly!
