WANT TO FEEL LIKE YOU ARE A MILLION MILES AWAY, BUT DO NOT WANT TO LEAVE THE UNITED STATES?? THESE AMERICAN ISLAND GETAWAYS WILL SEPARATE YOU FROM THE CITY LIFE AND GET YOU BACK IN TOUCH WITH NATURE!
Many people consider a stay-cation a period of time that you have off and you stay at home. That is true, but I also consider a stay-cation when you travel domestically. These American island getaways are the perfect escape for a fantastic stay-cation.
OCRACOKE ISLAND, NC
This dreamy southern getaway is quintessential coastal North Carolina. If you are looking for seclusion, slow pace, and a beautiful natural setting look no further. Ocracoke is the type of island that doesn't require you to have shoes and shirts on to get in, a place where you will encounter more bicycle traffic than cars, a place where you will find 100 year old live water oak trees rather than buildings, and a place where you can enjoy both ocean and sound activities.
Another treat about visiting this American Island Getaway is that it is one that the actual journey to the destination is almost as exciting as the destination itself! You can get to Ocracoke two ways, but the primary route is through Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The drive down Route 12 offers some of the most exquisite scenery in North Carolina and keeps on coming when you have to board a ferry that will take you and your car through the Pamlico Sound.
Ocracoke Island is nothing short of being the most perfect getaway on the East Coast and most definitely needs to be on your must see list!
MONTAUK, NEW YORK
This upstate American Island Getaway is the perfect oasis for those who live in urban areas. Montauk is a place seems to have not been touched by time, other than the trendy and urban restaurants and hotels that have to accommodate the swanky upper class. But even those establishments have kept the old town feel to always give you the escape of city life that is so desperately needed.
Montauk is a mix between the Hampton and the Outer Banks of North Carolina so if you enjoy sparsely populated beaches, great fishing, amazing food, trendy and locally owned establishments all in a gorgeous natural setting you should head to Montauk any time of the year!
LUMMI ISLAND, WASHINGTON STATE
Experts from Afar Magazine said, "On Lummi Island, about two hours from Seattle, you can bike miles of farm roads, hike to the summit of Baker Mountain, and take a “wild foraging-and-feasting” sea kayaking trip with Elakah Expeditions to prowl the coast for nori, sea lettuce, and bull kelp."
It’s just a short 5-minute passage from the mainland to Lummi Island aboard the Whatcom Chief. Round-trip fares are collected during the passage to the Island. The island's motto is this: "Lummi Islanders live in a smaller, slower scale and we like to keep it that way. Don't forget to wave!" With a population of just 816 I can understand why they live by this!
This is my kind of island!
