Books That Inspire Children To Travel

Is it ever to early to start sharing the travel experience with your child?

I do not think so.

Let their imagination run wild and take them to far away lands while they sit in your lap or while they frolic in the safety of your backyard.  

Everyone knows how important it is to read to your children so choose wisely.  We as parents have the ability to shape their delicate little minds how we think would be beneficial to them.  

We want to expose our little one to books that invoke his imagination to take him away to far away lands, to colorful destinations with exotic animals and adventure around every corner.  

But what about learning to have adventures at home too?

The first book I have chosen to share with Noah involves both foreign and domestic adventures.

Toot and Puddle by Holly Hobbie

Toot and Puddle is a story of two best friend biggie pies that reflect the saying "opposites attract".  One loves to travel and the other prefers to stay at home; but that does not stop them from sharing their adventures with each other.  While Toot travels the world he sends post cards back to the anxiously awaiting Puddle.  Puddle also shares with Toot what he has been up to at home to show him that you can adventures close to home too!

The second book that I think is a good one to read shows the child how preparing for the trip can be half of the fun.  Growing up, I always would pack weeks ahead of time out of pure excitement.  Packing everything under the sun, taking it out putting it back in...over and over.  This is a great book!

Its Vacation Time by Lerryn Korda

Its Vacation Time introduces kids on how to pack for a vacation and how to enjoy it - that it is not a chore.  

Ages 1-3

The third book is simply a visual celebration.  The story is simple but when combined with the illustrations the imagination sparks to life and takes you away into the pages and around the world.  

All the World by Liz Garton Scanlon

All the World is about a boy and his younger sister on a summer day and you travel through their imagination around the world but end back with mom and dad quiet in their home.

My fourth favorite is about the alphabet and that is one of my favorite things to teach little kids.  Another one of my favorite things is vintage posters....vintage anything really!  

All Aboard! A Traveling Alphabet by Bill Mayer

The end of this book takes you to a zeppelin which I think is the coolest thing ever, especially for children this day in age who do not know what one is.

My last book that I would recommend to parents who want to inspire their children to travel is a wordless book that allows you to create your own story line.

From Sydney, Australia to Morocco, Spain travel the globe however you please.  The narration can be whatever the parents feel would be beneficial to the child, perhaps what they would tell their kids if they were actually there.
